Action versus inaction

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

(from Hamlet, spoken by Hamlet)

“To be, or not to be, that is the question:

Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,

Or to take arms against a sea of troubles

And by opposing end them. To die — to sleep,

No more; and by a sleep to say we end

The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks

That flesh is heir to: ‘tis a consummation

Devoutly to be wish’d. To die, to sleep;

To sleep, perchance to dream — ay, there’s the rub:

For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,

When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,

Must give us pause — there’s the respect

That makes calamity of so long life…..”

This always brings such a nostalgic feeling.. my daddy loves it and uses it frequently! I’m smiling just at the thought and images it brings to mind and yet again the different scenarios those words were used… so much is in that first line !!

Life oh life ! How many times do we ask ourselves, “should I? Shouldn’t I? “

Sometimes we act on impulse .. you touch a hot pan , you’ll scream , not much time to think on your reaction.

Then, what about a surgery? Sometimes you have time .. to think .. but for how long ?

Your action or inaction does have consequence. Both require effort and intentionality though in varying levels.

In today’s society, there’s an ever growing popularity of being active, lots of drive to get people moving , ‘just do it’, exercise, run, swim, get on with the diet, get married , have children :) , believe, the list is endless .. Just writing it makes my adrenaline rush.

There’s also the other side , don’t rush, take it easy , think about it, listen or think before you act….

Action or inaction is determined by various factors, social, physical, religious, learning , self-perception and decision making.

To what end? Ask self when faced with the choice or given the opportunity or power.
